What should I look for when choosing a ‘rehab’?

Which brand is better?

How do I know it will work?

What is the best value for money?

Choosing anything can sometimes be difficult. The decision is made even more difficult when you know nothing about the subject. Choosing a rehab facility is much the same as choosing a new washing machine. How do you know you are making the right choice?

The simple answer is... YOU DON'T !

However, there are certain things that you can look, and ask, for to identify if the facility is genuine:

  • Registration as an in-patient facility with the Department of Social Development according to Act 70 of 2008

  • Registration with the Department of Health as a registered detoxification unit.

  • The programme structure is especially important as rehab is not just a ‘flop-house’. The facility should have a structured psycho-social intervention programme. Ask to see an outline of the programme.

  • Look at the facility’s social media pages. Look for frequency of posting, content posted, and testimonials/reviews. These will give you an idea of the facility’s focus.

  • Ask about their recreational activities.

A reputable rehab centre should have all of the listed items above and more!

Remember, a ‘rehab’ programme shouldn’t just be about going somewhere… it’s about healing and dealing with the causes and consequences of the addiction.  Also bear in mind that going into a rehab programme is not like checking into a hotel. You are there to deal with the addiction, not to have a holiday.

The most important consideration though, is never choose a rehab based on price – the cheapest might not offer you the correct intervention, and the most expensive might give you the least in terms of recovery planning. Your future is at stake, so make your decision based on the points above.

In closing, the decision to go into a recovery programme is a brave and big one. It is not a decision that should be made in the same way as deciding which hotel to stay at. Evaluate which programme will offer you the best opportunity to build a solid, healthy recovery.

Elim Clinic takes pride in ensuring a treatment programme that offers a successful recovery opportunity to each service user entering the programme. After a few months of hard work, we are proud to announce the implementation of the redesigned ANCHOR Treatment Programme for inpatients on the third of March 2025.

Anchors.....

  • Control and ground us

  • Calm us when we feel out of control

  • Give us roots

  • Remind us of our goals, our values, and who we are

  • Reaffirm what is important to us

  • Why weathering the storm, giving in to behaviors that do not serve our interests, is worth it

  • Buoy 1 to 6 navigates the recovery process to position our service users to REFUSE TO SINK and STAY BOYANT.

Take note: The Anchor treatment programme is inclusive, treating both substance use and behavior addictions.

The structured out-patient programme is designed to give these service users the tools to enter recovery whilst working or studying.  The programme is offered over 9 sessions (including an assessment session) which can be accessed via face-to-face therapy, or virtually via Microsoft Teams.

Elim Clinic Extended-Stay Treatment

Elim Clinic is pleased to offer alternatives to those service users wanting longer-stay treatment as opposed to the usual 24 days.

The programme offered allows for 12 or 24 week stays at the clinic, thus affording the service user the opportunity to strengthen their recovery progress whilst at the Centre.

Furthermore, the programme is a structured bio-psycho-social intervention programme, and includes all costs related to treatment.

Testimonial of the month!

ELIM Clinic gave me the opportunity to stop running away, to turn around and walk into the storm I was running away from.  I could not escape or numb myself through addiction anymore.  I had to face everything I was running away from.  The group therapy, classes and individual therapy helped me to do this one day at a time.  I had to do the work.  I had to show up and allow myself to be authentically seen.  The program of ELIM Clinic helped me to identify my relapse signs and to choose healthy coping mechanisms that supports my sobriety and recovery.  ELIM Clinic helped me to write a sobriety plan that supports my recovery and to focus on long-term recovery maintenance.  ELIM Clinic was very professional and supported me in a professional way.  One of the most important skills that I have learnt at ELIM Clinic was emotional regulation.  I am grateful that ELIM Clinic touched my life in such a positive way.  I choose life.  I am alive.  I am worthy of love and belonging.

In the world as it is today, addiction is a constant and ever-increasing social problem. It is also evident that social media is an area that can be used to open up discussions and disrupt existing notions or beliefs. It is with this in mind that Elim Clinic launched its new social media strategy on 1st February 2025.

Focused on sharing information about addiction and the treatment and recovery of addiction, the strategy aims to open up the discourse around addiction and provide evidence-based posts that will, in time, break down the stigma that surrounds addiction.

With a presence on all major social media platforms, the aim of the strategy is to be a voice in the narrative of effective and sustained recovery from addiction.
