Recovery isn’t meant to be comfortable. In fact, discomfort is often the key to growth. It’s when we sit with the urges, confront our fears, and challenge old beliefs that true change happens. So how do we stay in that discomfort long enough for it to work its magic?
First, mindfulness is your anchor. Staying present with your feelings—without judgment—teaches you that you can handle discomfort without escaping. Journaling is another powerful tool: Write down your urges, your triggers, and your wins. It builds self-awareness and resilience.
Delaying gratification is also critical. When you feel the pull toward an old behaviour, practice the "urge surfing" technique: Breathe, wait, and let the wave pass. Each time you do, you strengthen your ability to tolerate discomfort.
Seeking support is essential. Join a group, talk to a therapist, or reach out to a trusted friend. They can remind you that discomfort is temporary—and growth is happening underneath.
Lastly, reframe discomfort as a sign of progress. The unease you feel means you’re stretching, learning, and becoming the person you want to be. Stay with it, and you’ll see the rewards of recovery unfold.
